As you begin planning your next blissful holiday, we want to support you as much as possible which is why we’ve put together a guide to the best time of year to visit the British Virgin Islands. So, sit back, relax and start dreaming of the rum cocktails and sandy beaches loved by couples, large groups and everyone in between.
Best time to go to the British Virgin Islands
The BVI is the ideal Winter sun destination for people looking to escape the cold, dark, rainy days of January and February. If you’ve always dreamed of spending Christmas on the beach, the BVI’s peak season means you’ll swap roasting chestnuts on open fires for snorkelling in turquoise waters.
When you’re planning your BVI charter, there are several seasons you need to be aware of as they may affect your decision as to when to visit the British Virgin Islands:
- Dry Season – This is also referred to as the peak season, which is generally considered the best time to visit the BVI. During this time, temperatures can top 27.5°C and you can expect an average of 52 mm rainfall per month, making it hot, dry and the perfect weather for exploring uninhabited islands. This is also when the sailing season takes place which means you’ll have the opportunity to experience world-renowned racing events such as the BVI Spring Regatta.
- Wet Season – May-November is known as the wet season in the BVI, where you’ll experience higher levels of humidity and rainfall. The wettest months are usually September, October and November, with an average of 174 mm per month.
- Hurricane Season – Within the wet season, the BVI also experiences a hurricane season, which officially lasts between June-November. The most common time for hurricanes, or tropical storms is between August-October, so consider this carefully when booking your sailing holiday. You need to take extra safety precautions if you’re planning on travelling during the hurricane season. Check out the ‘useful information’ page for the BVI to learn more about health and safety during your charter.
The seasons in the BVI are very similar to many of our other Caribbean sailing destinations, such as Antigua and St. Martin. Fallen in love with the sound of the BVI? Build a quote and book your BVI yacht charter today.

Best time to sail the BVI outside of the highest season
While December to April is considered the best time to visit the British Virgin Islands (BVI), those seeking an exciting yacht charter experience outside the peak season still have several excellent options.
Thanks to the BVI’s year-round sunshine, warm weather, and outstanding sailing conditions, visiting during the wet season is also an option. However, you’ll want to plan carefully, particularly if you’re considering travelling during hurricane season, as extreme weather could be a factor.
Alternatively, you might visit on the fringes of the peak season, between November and December or April and May.
Why is this the best time to sail in the BVI outside the high season?
March is the most popular month for visiting the BVI, as families flock to these stunning islands during the Easter Break. By travelling outside this period, you’re likely to enjoy fewer crowds and the tranquillity of quiet, pristine beaches.
Booking in November or May could mean significant savings as you’ll avoid the peak season prices. You’ll still experience all the wonders of the high season, including balmy temperatures, warm waters, and excellent sailing conditions.
Looking for the ultimate party getaway? Booking your BVI yacht charter in July offers the unique opportunity to enjoy Christmas in July, an annual celebration in the BVI. While it’s outside the peak season, the festivities are full of fun, food, dancing, drinks, and sailing. Learn more about Christmas in July
