Travel inspiration: Best destinations for family holidays

We may not be able to travel overseas just yet, but in this blog, we look ahead to the future and share some of our favourite destinations to enjoy as a family.

From island hopping in the Bahamas to sheltered harbours and dramatic scenery in Croatia, a yacht charter holiday is an adventure for the whole family.  You’ll discover a holiday that offers something for every generation, whether you opt for beach barbecues, spot landmarks on the horizon, row the dinghy to a secluded bay, fish off the back of the boat or swim ashore to sample delicious local delicacies.

The British Virgin Islands

Top of the Baths, Virgin Gorda

The British Virgin Islands are blessed with year-round warm weather, steady trade winds, calm, cobalt-blue waters and Bougainvillea-clad hillsides. The main island of Tortola is the yacht charter capital of the Caribbean, and arguably the most famous boating destination in the world. Throughout the island, you will find small food shacks serving all kinds of Caribbean delights, from home-cooked chicken and rice to roti and salt fish. When the sun goes down, visit Cane Garden Bay and try one of the island’s famous painkiller cocktails.

In 2018, champion sailor Simon Shaw took to the British Virgin Islands with his young family for an unforgettable sailing adventure. With over 15 years of professional sailing experience under his belt, the Double Match Racing World Champion and America’s Cup host embarked on a different kind of sailing challenge — planning his son Babar’s first holiday on the open ocean! For cruising in the BVI’s all-year-round smooth conditions, Simon took The Moorings 4500 4 cabin catamaran out, with his wife Ita and little Babar on tow. Croatia, Agana

Agana, Croatia

Over recent years, Croatia has received a growing interest from travellers and has become one of the most popular boating destinations in the Mediterranean due to its pristine beaches, unspoilt natural settings, and diverse charter routes. Whether you and your family enjoy swimming and snorkelling, sunbathing, exploring archaeological sites, browsing the markets, or tasting the local cuisine – Croatia is a great option for those looking for something a little different.

A typical seven-day Agana itinerary focuses on cruising to the islands of Solta, Hvar, Vis, and Brac, and to the Kornati Islands National Park north of the port of Split. The lively, culture-rich islands of Brač, Šolta and Hvar to the south and east are just the start, with an endless array of peaceful, picturesque islands, beaches and moorings to explore. To the north and west, the remote, untouched islands of the Kornati Archipelago – an unspoilt national park renowned for its stunning scenery – lie in wait. These islands have a wide variety of harbours ranging from traditional fishing villages where the pace of life is slow, to ports with small cities full of history and charm.

The Kornati National Park in Croatia is a must-see.  Composed of 140 uninhabited islands, islets and reefs covering 300 square kilometres, the national park is known for its natural beauty, rugged cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear blue waters.

Bahamas, Exumas

Exumas, Bahamas

The fabulous Exumas chain that extends over 100 miles north-south through the heart of the Bahamas is riddled with highlight-worthy experiences both on and offshore, making this a family holiday to remember. Discover the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park – one of the largest protected marine parks in the world – to appreciate pristine underwater beauty in its purest form. At Big Major Spot, animal-lovers can splash around on the beach with the world-famous swimming pigs. The exotic strip of deserted beaches and idyllic anchorages dispersed throughout the Exumas provide an optimal setting for a family holiday.

Check out our blog on what to expect from your Exumas yacht charter.

Chartering a yacht is a great way for families to enjoy time together and learn about teamwork. But if you want more time to play, try a skippered yacht charter with your family. Your experienced skipper can show you the ropes or take you to whichever destinations you prefer, leaving you to enjoy more time with your loved ones.
