4 Ways to Recreate that Holiday Feeling at Home

Many of us have experienced the disappointment of having our travel plans suspended, and although this is understandable in the circumstances, like us you are probably dreaming of sunny shores, sparkling Mediterranean waters, and relaxing evenings under the stars.

One of the main reasons we travel is to unwind from the stresses of everyday life, so as we find ourselves at home during these challenging times it is important that we take care of our mental health and wellbeing. We will all get to travel again, and until then we have pulled together some simple ways to look after your emotional wellbeing and perhaps even recreate those feelings you get from your travels.

Do something for yourself

The best part of a holiday is the sense of freedom and being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Recreate this by doing something simple for yourself at home. This could be anything from reading a book, having a long bath, meditating, or just sitting quietly and enjoying a glass of something special. Why not recreate the ambience of your favourite destination with a travel-inspired dish? Set the table, press play on a holiday-inspired playlist, and take the time to enjoy the meal with those around you. You are on holiday, so why rush?

Explore the outdoors

Often our travel plans involve being outside and exploring new places. As we write this, restrictions on outdoor exercise have been lifted, so make the most of it and get outside for some fresh air. Go for a walk, sit in the park, and take some time to really appreciate your surroundings. Perhaps there are areas around your village, town, or city that you have never visited? Try choosing the path you have never walked before and see where it takes you, you never know what you may discover on your very own doorstep.

If you are lucky enough to be a reasonable distance from the coast you can try indulging in some Ocean Therapy, which relates to the psychological benefit of spending time by the ocean. According to experts, taking part in activities by, in or on the water helps us to achieve a ‘flow state’. This is when our internal chatter quiets and we can be fully present and immersed in the current moment, helping us to feel calmer and less stressed.

Our sailing holidays are designed to offer travellers a unique way to explore stunning destinations and experience the beauty of the ocean, but until then, you could get your dose of Ocean Therapy by simply taking a walk along the coast, paddling in the sea, or delving into some water sports like surfing.

Connect with others

Holidays often mean spending time with those who matter most to us. Although we cannot currently enjoy all coming together in person, it is still important to stay connected. Perhaps you can all start planning your next holiday together, or take part in some group activities? If you have not tried meditation or yoga before, there is a whole host of beginner resources and classes available online for you to try. Jump on one of the many conferencing platforms available, such as Google Hangouts, hit play on the tutorial and enjoy a virtual class together. You never know, you may catch the bug and find yourself looking for wellness retreats for your next trip!

If you’re feeling inspired for when we can travel again, our holiday planners at The Moorings would be delighted to help you plan the perfect destination for a retreat and reboot, whether you want to try yoga on the water in Thailand, or a more active beach bootcamp in the Mediterranean.

Stay inspired

There will come a time when we can all go overseas again, and your favourite destinations will be ready and waiting with open arms to greet you. In the meantime, stay inspired and keep focused on the future. Think about all the places you can go that you have never been to before, or remind yourselves of that favourite destination that you cannot wait to return to. Create a travel Pinterest board, read the travel pages, and get some inspiration to share with your friends and family. Soon we will all be travelling again together.

Stay safe and we hope to see you on the water soon.
