Qualifications to sail a Power yacht with The Moorings
Whether you want to admire the breathtaking natural beauty of Croatia or explore the turquoise waters of the Bahamas, every destination has its own requirements and qualifications to charter a Power yacht.
At The Moorings, we have specific requirements that apply to all destinations, from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean.
If you want to skipper a Power yacht with The Moorings, you must:
- Be over the age of 18 (or have at least one skipper over 18)
- Be competent in handling a yacht in close quarters
- Be confident to anchor and moor in varying conditions
- Be able to use navigation and pilotage skills to plan the day’s sailing and know your position at any time
Alongside the formal qualifications to sail a Power yacht, there are also some key skills that will take you from sailing zero to sailing hero:
- Effective navigational skills
- Confidence
- Ability to forward plan
- Calm under pressure
- Strong leadership
- Practical skills such as knot tying, awareness of sailing terminology and anchoring

Do I need a license to captain a Power yacht?
Do you want to experience the thrill of chartering a Power yacht? Many regions require no formal certifications, you just need to meet our specifications outlined in the previous section. However, if you’re setting sail in Greece, the Seychelles or Croatia, you will need a license to sail a Power yacht:
Qualifications to sail a Power yacht in Greece
Alongside the requirements and skills we and require for all our destinations, to be able to experience the magic of Greece from the comfort of your Power yacht, you need to have:
- US PowerBoating Association – “Inshore Powerboat Cruising” or above (you may have similar/equivalent certification from any recognized sailing association instead).
OR
- ICC (International Certificate of Competence) in the Power 10 meters and over category

Qualifications to sail a Power yacht in Croatia
To set sail on a peaceful Power charter around the picturesque Dalmatian Coast, you must hold at least one of the following:
- US PowerBoating Association – “Inshore Powerboat Cruising” or above (you may have similar/equivalent certification from any recognized sailing association instead).
- RYA – “Level 2 Powerboat Handling” or above
OR
- ICC (International Certificate of Competence) in the Power 10 meters and over category
The skipper is also required to have a VHF Radio Operator’s License.

The Seychelles has very similar qualifications to sail a Power yacht as Croatia:

- RYA – “Level 2 Powerboat Handling” or above

- ICC (International Certificate of Competence) in the Power 10 meters and over category

How can I gain the qualifications to charter a power yacht?
It couldn’t be easier to find out whether you’re qualified to sail a Power yacht. Simply fill out our Power Resume and we’ll let you know whether you’ve got the green light to take the helm on a bareboat Power charter or need to gain further qualifications.
